LITTLE BOOK OF LOVE

Picture
A complete illuminated manuscript in 36 full page color plates

Petit Livre d'Amour (Little Book of Love) is a collection of love poems written by Pierre Sala (1457–1529), an antiquary and valet de chambre of Louis XII. Dedicated by the author to his mistress and wife-to-be Marguerite Builloud, the poems are noted for their realistic portrayal of love, lamenting its hardships and uncertainties. The manuscript is hand-written by Sala in gold ink and its exquisite miniatures attributed to the so-called ‘Master of the Chronique Scandaleuse’ a celebrated illuminator active in Paris at the time. The manuscript is presently held by the British Library, London.
